SPL Synthesists have long had the ability to change the attack and sustain of a sound using envelopes. However, doing this with nonsynthesized instruments is more difficult and requires the patient programming of gates, compressors, and limiters. Enter the SPL Transient Designer 4, a 4-channel device that sculpts the attack and release characteristics of a signal in ways heretofore impossible with a single device. The Transient Designer 4 uses SPL's proprietary Differential Envelope Technology to produce two distinct envelopes for the attack portion of a sound and two for the sustain portion. These envelope pairs are used to create a difference signal that controls a VCA. The result gives you the ability to shape transient characteristics with only two controls for each channel: Attack and Sustain. Link switches are provided for slaving one set of controls to another. The Attack control allows you to boost or attenuate the attack part of a signal by 15 dB, and the Sustain control gives you 24 dB of cut or boost. With only two controls — note that there is no threshold or ratio control — it's easy to dial in the right sound every time. And the Transient Designer 4 lets you go from subtle to extreme processing in no time. Need to make a staccato guitar line more legato or vice versa? You've come to the right place. SPL RECEIVES TWO TEC NOMINATIONS 2003 Tech Awards
Germany, June 2, 2003 — SPL is proud to announce that the MMC1 Multichannel Mastering Console and PQ Mastering Equalizer have both been nominated for the coveted 2003 TEC Award in the category of Outstanding Technical Achievement.
The discrete, all-analog MMC1 is the first full-featured, DVD-A- and SACD-compatible 8-channel mastering console for stereo and 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround. Features include comprehensive I/O and metering, a logic-controlled memory patchbay, custom-designed multichannel potentiometers and 32-position trim switches. The console is built to order and finished in any of 29 colors. The first MMC1 in the US was recently installed by Bob Ludwig in Gateway Mastering and DVD's newly refurbished Mastering A suite.
The
innovative dual-channel PQ
features five bands of fully analog, discrete Class A parametric
equalization plus total recall and band/channel sync. Each band overlaps
its neighbor by one octave and offers selectable proportional and
constant Q. Up to five PQs or ten channels can be synchronized and
controlled with an optional remote control unit. The group of PQ users
has grown immensely in recent months to include Hans Zimmer, Bernie
Becker, Kevin McNolty and Bob Ludwig among many others.
Both
units are based on SPL's renowned high-gain technology and SUPRA
op-amps, utilizing 120-Volt internal operating voltage for unprecedented
dynamic range, headroom, bandwidth and audio purity, and are handcrafted
using the finest components available.
