SPL
has a well-earned reputation for designing highly specialized audio
processing tools, many of which exploit audiometric principles in
order to achieve a more musical sound. Their philosophy is very much
"one box for one task", and emphasis is placed upon a
straightforward and manageable user interface, while often employing
unique processing concepts.
The
new SPL Channel One is a complete channel strip based largely on
processing elements already developed and proven by SPL within their
existing range of separate processors. It is envisaged that the unit
will be of particular interest to those operating tape less studios.
The target customers are computer based recording studios who are
seeking a premium front end, though it is equally applicable to any
demanding recording situation, whether digital or analogue.
Channel
One incorporates a tube mic/line preamplifier, a de-esser, a
compressor/limiter with noise gate, an special EQ-section and a
headphone monitoring solution. In accordance with SPLs ease of use
philosophy, Channel One features parameter automation in several
areas to keep the number of knobs and switches to a minimum.
Channel
One's tube mic preamp offers 48V phantom power, both pad and phase
reverse switches, and may also be used as instrument tube
preamplifier via a high impedance jack connector on the front panel.
This is ideal for recording clean guitar, bass and electronic
instruments.
The
unique "one-knob" de-esser operates in auto-threshold mode
and remains effective over an extremely wide range of input signal
levels. Unlike conventional de-essers, it does not reduce the level
of the entire signal during sibilant events, but instead affects
only that part of the frequency spectrum affected by sibilance. This
leads to a more transparent, natural sound with minimal side
effects.
The
compressor/limiter section utilizes SPLs Double-VCA-Drive providing
outstanding dynamic performance without artifacts or negative side
effects. This is a smooth and very versatile compressor that's
simplicity to set up. Also incorporated is a noise gate with
ARC-technology for vice-free gating.
Perhaps
best known for their unique equalizer designs, SPL has devised a
powerful equalizer section specifically for vocals and acoustic
instruments: The Sound Performance Optimizer. It incorporates
various EQ elements optimized to improve the power, impact, and
intimacy of a voice, as well as a distortion control that can either
subtly enhance or fully distort a vocal track.
To
combat the latency problem of HD recording systems, Channel One is
equipped with a headphone monitoring section and a phone plug on the
front allowing the user to monitor the signal being recorded without
it first having to make a round trip through the computer. This
avoids delay or phasing problems.
As
an option, Channel One can be equipped with a 24/96
AD-converter and Lundahl transformers are available for the
analogue I/O stage offering an even smoother and classier sound.
